Firstly may I apologise for anyone calling themselves a believer who has levelled hate against you and your congregation. Love should always be a guiding principle in these matters for God truly is love.
Love, however, must hate. Let me explain. If I love children I will hate paedophilia, child abuse etc. My love for children compels me and I have no choice. Your love for the asylum seeker's children likewise causes you to hate their captivity and poor treatment.
Similarly God's love for His own name causes Him, compels Him to hate blasphemy. His love for His Word contained in the Bible means that he hates his words being twisted, even "lampooned".
Remember how Jesus cursed those who took God's words and twisted them for their own gain as in the case of "Corban" in Mark 7:11ff.
The bible clearly teaches that Jesus was born of a virgin. Your billboard tells me that you simply do not believe this. My question is if the bible is wrong at this point, how can it be trusted when it speaks of God loving the world?
If it is wrong in its history how can you trust it in its theology.
You ask the question, "[Which] is more blasphemous... a billboard lampooning the virgin birth or children of asylum seekers being denied Christmas gifts?"
While my heart goes out to the children who will not receive the gifts intended for them I can't classify this as blasphemy, where the billboard certainly is.
What is love? Christ dying for sinners.
Who can say they haven't committed adultery in their heart, or stolen, or lied or blasphemed? I know I have. Why would Christ die for law-breakers? Love.
Christ lived a sinless and perfect life because we are unable to. Repenting of one's sins and trusting in Christ's work on the cross is the only way to eternal life.
Though the timing of Christmas (not to mention the origins of the holiday) are open to debate by Christians within the realm of orthodoxy, the virgin birth is not and never has been.
