Plut o and Beyond

3_Plutos.jpg

The recent controversy over Pluto's status has sparked the imagination of SMACA.  In Crosshairs, Glynn reflects on the debate and wanders into a theological wonderland.  eNZed leNZ looks at the darker side of conversion sparked by Pope Benedict's recent comments and Islam's response from the perspective of intelligent life in the cosmos.  Second Thoughts by the Editor of the Indepenent, Dominic Lawson, looks at how the Pope really feels about Islam. In SmacaSermon Glynn challenges the church to leave sure foundations and set sail for new theological horizons.

As always we hope you will engage us and each other by posting comments following the articles or emailing us.

The offer of $150 still stands for those of you who submit articles for Second Thoughts addressing past issues or subjects you would like to see covered in future issues.

We hope you enjoy this issue and will pass it along to your friends.

Quips and Quotes

"Even as the planets reveal themselves to scientific investigation, and repeat themselves across the universe, they retain the emotional weight of their long significance on our lives, and all that they have ever signified in Earth's skies.  Gods of old, and demons, too, they were once - they still are - the sources of an inspiring light, the wanderers of night, the far horizon of the landscape of home."

Dava Sobel quote from "The Planets"

smaca prayer

Spinning, circling, elusive, and foreign
the planets invite us to wonder.
May the mysteries of the universe
entice us into the mysteries of our own soul,
and there to find and be found by God

Crossing the Theological Threshold:the journey from house to ship

Glynn Cardy © September 24th 2006 Matthew.   Sitting at his tax booth, doing his extorting best, like the good little Roman lackey he was.   Along breezes Jesus.   “Hey, you, follow me!”   The breeze lifts him up, picks him up, snaps the mooring ropes, and he's away.
